Poynton's Vector Article #15: Order-of-operations


Color science authority Charles Poynton writes article 15 in our monthly Poynton's Vector column titled Order-of-operations. The article talks about among many things the uncomfortable, unspoken truth of home theater calibration, where  three-quarters of the effort is expended in dialing-out poorly chosen factory presets.

Poynton's Vector: CONTRAST, BRIGHTNESS, and the naming of things

We are very pleased that Charles Poynton, color science authority and author of the textbooks the whole video industry relies on, writes a monthly column for SpectraCal called "Poynton's Vector." The first article is titled CONTRAST, BRIGHTNESS, and the naming of things.

Highlights:
  • A lingering video profession issue: Consumers not knowing what knob to turn to make their pictures brighter!
  • Contrast and brightness controls are misnamed, with white and black level being more logical choices. 
  • The video and HDTV industry should consider adopting Apple’s move to remove brightness control from consumer displays.
